At around the time of the Brind stories, football was banned in English villages. In fact all sports were, or anything else that took up time better spent on war training, especially archery practice.
To the teacher, you didn't leave your name, who wrote regarding Scarper Jack and the Bloodstained Room. The three key themes of the novel are: friendship; the relationship between fathers and sons; and the need to be brave and do what you know is right.
The main inspiration was the question 'What if?'. In this case, what if you overheard a murder being planned?
I feel Jack's main and most appealing characteristic is his loyalty.
I hope this helps with your lesson planning and that your class enjoys reading the book.
